Once You Were Responsible – Rich’s Rule # 2

September 9, 2014

Rich's Rules TitlecardOnce You Were Responsible – Now You Are Accountable

Once upon a time you were hired to do a job.  You took responsibility, did the job well and advanced in your work, department and organization.  At some point you were promoted into a management or a leadership role.  Despite the fact you now have many people who answer to you, you can’t resist the temptation to try to do their jobs too – because you know you can do it faster or better.

The problem is, you are now in a position of overseeing the work of others – of accomplishing more through the efforts of many.  Letting go is a big challenge for many developing leaders. It’s vital to know when to help employees and when to draw the line and let them do the job.  It’s important for you to understand that once you were responsible for a few things, and now you are accountable for the work for which others are – or should be – responsible.

For this reason I’ve chosen Now You Are Accountable as Rich’s Rule #2.
