It’s All Connected

After many years of working in sales, service, management and leadership positions it occurs to me just how similar are each of these roles.

When I was a kid I sold newspapers and candy door to door to earn money.  In the spring and summer I asked people if they wanted their lawn mowed and in the winter if they needed their driveways shoveled.  During high school and early college I worked in a variety of retail and handyman types of jobs, learning the importance of good customer service and quality work.  Later I was given opportunities to manage or lead in various organizations.  Here’s my conclusion:

People who want to be successful in sales need a customer service or satisfaction orientation and the ability to lead people to conclusions and agreement.   Those wanting to provide excellent customer service also must be able and wiling to suggest, present and sell ideas, solutions and options to their customers while leading them to a satisfactory experience.   Good leaders usually serve their followers, customers and community while being able to sell others on their ideas.
